Synopsis:
China during the Cultural Revolution. A prisoner has escaped from his labour camp to see a particular newsreel. But an orphan girl has stolen precisely this film roll. Meanwhile, the villagers are waiting eagerly for the screening to begin.
Director’s Biography:
One of the most important and influential filmmakers in China, and a core member of China’s “Fifth Generation” directors, Zhang Yimou started his career as a cinematographer and became a director in 1987. Over the years, Zhang has directed films which received accolades from around the world.
In 2012, Zhang received Lifetime Achievement Award at the Mumbai Int’l Film Festival, a special award of merit at South Korea’s Daejong Awards, and award for Outstanding Achievement at the Marrakech Int’l Film Festival and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cairo Int’l Film Festival.
