Synopsis
"Kaali" is set in a rural Malaysian plantation in 1966 where Kali, a young wife, finds herself being subjected to oppression and humiliation by her mother-in-law and others because she couldn’t have a baby. Unable to handle the suffocation and domestication after a certain point, Kali relies on her own rebellious energy and the mysterious powers of nature to rise above the ill doings to protect herself and her environment.
Director
Gogu is a director, editor, fine artist and occasionally an actor. He has made a number of short films, travelogues, corporate videos, music videos and documentaries both for clients and his own personal interests. His short film “Bird on the 27th floor” has been selected for Seashorts Film Festival 2021, and another short film he directed “Virus Mairus” has won the 2020 Kuman Pictures Challenge. The short film “Snap” that he edited has won Best Film and Best Editor award in the 48 Hours New Zealand Short Film Competition (2014).
Producer
Kuma is a law graduate who went on to work in video and film production. He has worked on a range of productions such as films, TV shows, documentaries, TVCs, music and corporate videos. Since 2011, he has been a freelancer donning different hats in different productions across all departments in the field. Since 2017, he has been juggling between running OpenSauce café at Me.reka Makerspace and producing. He is one of the founding members of Padai Film Community and has collaborated extensively with director Gogu in many projects winning several awards together.
